Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apt
I did a dist-upgrade from edgy to dapper. While at dapper, the system was smooth and stable. I had not installed anything from source; only via apt-get. Once I got to edgy, I started having issues. These included: 1) X not reliably starting; sometimes if I ctrl alt switched to tty7 just at the right time, X would come up. Otherwise, I'd get a blank screen, and would have to switch to a tty and startx manually. 2) Grub "automagic" config not obeying BIOS order (this was actually present on dapper too) whenever there was a kernel install, leading to much booting from the livecd to tweak menu.lst. Described in bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/grub/+bug/74601 3) Flash playback being choppy. I got fed up with these and decided (before trying a completely different distro) to install edgy from cd. What do you know, the above issues went away. Therefore, the bug: dist-upgrade != livecd installation. Perhaps instead of relying on dist-upgrade to do the job, you need to roll out an updater that works from a specific manifest, or similar. ** Affects: apt (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- dist-upgrade from dapper is not a comprehensive edgy install https://launchpad.net/bugs/77574 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
