Installing kubuntu from livecd, the partition manager did not recognize
an entire hard disk. It was marked as being inactive and hidden. I
managed to mark it as active, but could get the fs type to be set via
the partition manager. I fsck'ed it, and there was a problem with the
superblock. After fscking, it was possible to mount it, explicitly
specifying the file system type. Even from this situation, both qtparted
and the installer's partition manager (which is basically qtparted,
right?) were unable to recognize / set the file system type of the disk,
without formatting it first. Finally, of course I had to manually add a
line to /etc/fstab once the install was done to get the disk to be
recognized.
Here's what I would suggest:
* Installer comes with disk recovery tool that allows fscking, etc
* Installer comes with file system guessing tool which will attempt to mount
the file system with different types, until it gets a valid one
* Partition manager comes with advanced ability to "set" file system type
without altering the file system itself, i.e. just for the fstab configuration
