Some updates:

* I recreated a default xorg.conf using "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh 
xserver-xorg", then selected the nvidia driver => does not change anything.
* upgrading to nvidia-glx-180 fixes the blackscreen, but gives me funny display 
corruption: the rightmost 50 pixels on the screen are now on the left (the 
whole screen is misaligned and it wraps on the screen edge). So this is not an 
option.
