For reference, this is an xorg.conf that was generated when I had Mandriva (also with KDE 4.2.1) installed on this same machine. On this installation the screen was not displaced. This Mandriva installation uses a different version of X; I tried this xorg.conf on my Kubuntu installation but it made no difference to the problem, this version of X ignores nearly everything in the file. Notice how the ModeLines probed by Mandriva (using gtf) and different from the ones in the Xorg log from Ubuntu I attached above.
