Here's the promised log-files and photographs to make the issue easier to understand.
Note: the xserver doesn't fallback into fail-safe mode in this scenario, it is only a case that monitors show no output. Here's the tests I did, after which I took a photograph and copied the current /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log 1. Default xorg.conf, no external monitor connected (laptop display shows 800x600 centered in 1024x768 display) 2.
