EUREKA !!!! After much tinkering with the system, I played with Volume Control and it opened up the Alsa Mixer for my Audigy 2 ZS. I was playing with sliders and other stuff when I clicked on the other tab for switches (not playback where all of the slider controls are). There is one entry on this screen entitled...
Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack: with a check box next to it. That box was checked. I unchecked it and I got sound immediately from the radio station I was attempting to stream via RhythmBox. I have no idea why this was selected after the big download patch, but my problem is SOLVED. Hope it helps someone else...
