Hi, I had the same problem with HP NC6320 and I've revised my Xorg.conf
I had this options which I had to delete to make volume buttons works
again:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
Option "DontZap" "False"
EndSection
and delete Option "AllowEmptyInput" "off" in Section "ServerLayout"
