I'm suffering by the same problem (probably the same MachineType (Pavilion dv9533eg) ), see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/290697 Last known working Ubuntu version is 8.04 LTS. I will test the newest .29-rc later the day.
