Arie - The NVIDIA driver is proprietary and closed source. This means that only NVIDIA can fix bugs with their driver. Ubuntu cannot fix problems with the NVIDIA driver, and this is exactly the same situation on Windows too. Whilst there is an open-source alternative (nouveau) developed independently of NVIDIA, the support from this driver is low and development lags behind the official NVIDIA driver because they refuse to release specifications for their chipsets, making it very difficult for anyone else to develop drivers.
If you don't like this, then go and complain to NVIDIA. There is nothing that anyone else can do, and this applies in the Windows world too. I can't speak for the other hardware in your machine, because I don't know what it is. However, Ubuntu supports a lot of (most) hardware with open-source drivers that ship with the kernel. -- Saving Preferences impossible https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/344173 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
