Comment/workaround for Intrepid (I don't know if this will be obsolete
in Jaunty): I added the following two lines to
/etc/udev/rules.d/40-permission.rules:

ATTRS{modalias}=="input:*-*a[068],*|input:*-*a*,[68],*m*",
ATTRS{modalias}!="input:*-*k*14A,*r*", ENV{ID_CLASS}="joystick"

KERNEL=="event*", ENV{ID_CLASS}=="joystick", GROUP="plugdev"

The ATTRS line is copied from 60-persistent-input.rules.
