Yes it is, just run Places->Connect to Server and connect to any FTP server, e.g. ftp.gnome.org port 21. Now a device will appear on your desktop, click on it. Select any file and do a right click->properties->permissions. It will give you "The permissions of XXX could not be determined.". could you try on jaunty?
