Binary package hint: udev
I upgraded from Intrepid to jaunty and ended up with no network. It
turned out udev had renamed eth0 to eth1, so my /etc/network/interfaces
no longer worked. (This is a desktop machine with only one ethernet
interface, a Via-rhine chip on the motherboard.)
Removing /etc/udev/conf.d/70-persistent-net.rules fixed the problem and
on the next reboot my ethernet card was back on eth0. The MAC address
hadn't changed -- I'll attach the 70-persistent-net.rules to show that
both entries had the same MAC address.
This is the same issue as in bugs 153727, bug 145382 and bug 208103,
except that in Jaunty the Via-rhine networking chip is now triggering
it, which never happened before. After some discussion in bug 153727
Scott James Remnant said it was always better to file a new bug even if
it seemed to match the same behavior as in older bugs, so that's what
I'm doing.
