When I attempted re-installation from Synaptics, it installed without error.
The error happened during a mass update of packages (over 200 mb of data). I had been on the road and not run updates since the 18th. Everything else seems to be fine, but the automatic process produced this error. If you have a way for me to retest, I will follow instructions but otherwise I am out of my depth.
