In order to be sure my old config files were not affecting this, I
created a test user logged out and logged in as that user.

Everything I tried as that user played through the server instead of the
thin client. I rebooted the thin client, logged in as that user and
everything played through the thin client. I then logged out and logged
in as my usual user and everything I played went through the server --
unlike what I had experienced earlier.

It would appear that the first user to login on a thin client somehow
"locks" the esd sound server. From then on, only that user can play
sound via the sound card. Presumably, gstreamer falls back to playing
on the local server sound device when playing over esd fails. Does
anyone else see this?

For the minute, in order to let multiple users have sound on a thin
client, they must reboot the client at each login.
