I've installed [ Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit ] on my newly built system and can't
seem to get the sound to work what so ever. My mother board is the Asus
M4A78T-E and has integrated audio. I've run through the steps at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting and got to the
part where it told me I should report a bug.
I've checked all the audio settings and tried every combination I can
with them and no luck. I have the audio turned on in my BIOS because
this is a dual boot with Vista Home Premium 64 bit and I get sound in
there no problem.
This is what "aplay -l" returned:

Didn't really expect much but was hoping the troubleshooting guild would
do something. Not sure to the exact chipset that is used for the audio
on my motherboard but I can tell you that the owner's manual says it
uses the VIA VT1708s 8-channel High Definition Audio CODEC. In the
Chipset box it lists AMD 790GX (which is onboard video) and SB750.
I had Fedora 10 running on this mobo and when I search the web for
"M4A78T-E Fedora 10" I got to this page

from a post in one of the search results. The "Installing the latest
stable ALSA modules" section is as far as I had to get and the sound was
fixed, but I'm a little more partial to Ubuntu. Thought this might help.
