Let's ignore this for now. It turned out that the Uname: 2.6.28-9 from
below was real, and the booted system was a weird mixture of a two-week
old image with 2.6.28-9 (which booted fine) and current jaunty. However,
after wiping the USB stick and re-installing with usb-creator, it does
not boot at all. Looks like a regression in usb-creator.

If I can reproduce it again, I'll run the commands you suggested.
