Sebastien responded with what might be causing your problem with .gvfs
not being there.
10:18 < seb128> calc: you don't have .gvfs is gvfs-fuse is not installed or if
you don't have permissions to use fuse
10:19 < seb128> that used to be a group membership required, not sure nowadays

OOo should use %F instead of %U for desktop files.
