I had this problem, and it turned out to be just a simple misconfiguration. On 
the 'Account Settings' dialog, select your account. At the bottom of the page, 
there is a 'Manage Identities' button and above that is a combo box labeled 
'Outgoing SMTP server'. My problem was that this was set to one of my SMTP 
servers, and not to 'Use Default Sever'. Changing it to 'Use Default Sever' 
made everything work just fine.
