I confirm this bug for a hp dv 2000
ubuntu ibex intrepid dvd playback freeze while in windows works.
A typycal dmesg output:

Error apears randomly most of the time when reading a scratched disk, it is 
like the error correction on scratched disk is not working.
The same disk are read wiyhout problems in win.
Tried all the fixes suggested with no effects
