Interesting. After applying the latest updates earlier today, the boot-
time hang is gone. The graphical boot progress bar in the middle of the
screen is much thinner (vertically). The encrypted partition password
prompt text is still a bright white, however, I'm able to enter the
password and boot normally (no hang).
I still have the same linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic kernel installed, so
it must be some other package that broke/fixed it.
My problem seems to be fixed, though I don't know which package did it.
I'm not sure which status is most appropriate -- "invalid" seems like a
safe answer to me, as no further attention is (should be?) required.
