Thank you Paul and Till for your comments. Of course, the first thing I tried is contacting the packager. But he has apparently left the university since and is nowhere to be found (I think he works at a hospital now, but that is about all I was able to find out). Since the source is available and since this used to work, I think it is fair enough to try and give it a shot here in Ubuntu.
