Ok, it seems I should have search google using the word stutter, not hickup. The following search reveals the same problem a couple of times: http://www.google.nl/search?q=ubuntu+audio+stutter Killing pulseaudio with pulseaudio -k seems to solve the problem. The problem it seems is pulseaudio related not alsa.
