+ update: resume probably failed because idiot me had the wrong uuid set
+ for initramfs resume.
+ 
  system appeared to hibernate ok, but it didn't look like any attempt was
  made to resume.
  
  i wonder if it is related to having the swap partition on a fake raid
  drive?
