The following is without the two tv tuners installed:

I installed mythbuntu 8.10 with current updates to today.
Installed the nvidia-180-modaliases and used enyng to install the nvidia driver 
(180).
I then unselected the mythtv front end from autostarting in the xfce4 autostart 
manager.

Rebooted the machine, and now the desktop is usable until I use an application 
that touches anything to do with GLX:
mythtv frontend.
glxgears
the nvidia bug reporter (though it does appear to generate a complete file)
nvidia-settings (but only when selecting the GLX information).
