Aaron, thanks for that information. I've just had a look at the lspci
-vvnn output originally attached and the product documentation for the
Silicon Image SIL5723:

and can't see it in the lspci output. From the product documentation it
seems as if the SIL5723 acts as a client device behind a SATA
controller, allowing multiple other devices to appear as one single SATA
device.

This is probably something the Linux kernel needs to know how to detect
because it is a proprietary SATA extension that would prove almost
impossible to detect unless you already know about this device.
