I have a IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad R61i and am having the same problem. The function key for the lcd-brightness does NOT work. Adding "acpi_backlight=vendor" makes things work, but it creates a delay in detecting when the power is unplugged. During this period (60 secs approx.) the brightness keys do not work. When it picks up that it has been unplugged, everything is alright again. This delay also exists in the opposite situation (it has been unplugged and you plug it back in).
