Similar behaviour for my A70 in 9.10 8.10 8.04 and I think further back than that. Suspend seems to work OK; the power / status light "ring" around the on/off switch goes from solid blue to alternating orange/blue slow flash, screen goes black, drive & fan activity cease (this is what suspend used to do in Windoze XP way back). Pushing the power button starts the resume process, with power / status light going back to solid blue, but display never recovers from black. I don't see any disk activity but I did hear fans start up once.
