Thank you very much for your reply to this report.  I gathered some more 
information:
- on resume there are three beebs in a distance of about 2secs
- the system actually does resume, just not display anything - at least I can 
ping and login with ssh 2secs after the beebs
- I was able to reproduce this several times
- The extra PCIe MSI graphics adapter with NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS is set in BIOS 
as primary and used for X
- the onboard NVIDIA 6200 is not used (connector has a lose contact)
- it did fine work with Ubuntu 8.10 and the onboard graphics, both kinds of 
suspend
- unfortunately I never had a setup with Ubuntu 8.10 and the 8400GS (did not 
try)

The hints in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume do not
seem to apply to my problem, as it is clear that the X window system
cannot be resumed.  Any hints for this?  I am attaching the Xlogs from
the failed resume, but as far as i can see there is no further hint to
the problem.
