I was trying to add
<append key="input.keymap.data"
type="strlist">e012:brightnessdown</append>
<append key="input.keymap.data"
type="strlist">e017:brightnessup</append>
I tried it in a personal file in the '20' directory as described in the laptop
page that I mentioned earlier, when that didn't work. I tried to add those
lines in 30-keymap-hp.fdi. When that didn't work, I removed some other lines
just to see whether that has any effect. None of these changes had an impact on
input.keymap.data reported by lshal. In 8.10 and 9.04-Alpha5 this worked as
expected. In the Beta that I installed this morning straight from the CD it
didn't. Then I reinstalled Alpha-5 in another partition just to make sure that
I wasn't going crazy. It worked there. Back to the install from the Beta CD,
didn't work.
Just now I ran an upgrade on the system, there was a new kernel image,
new acpi support, new hal files, and now it works fine. I suppose there
was a bug and it's already fixed. I guess we can close this case.
Anyhow. I'm doing this for maintaining the laptop test page I mentioned.
For those tests I prefer a clean install from a CD without any upgrades,
because only that is a well-defined state. Maybe I'll repeat the whole
thing tomorrow to see whether it's me or the machine who is crazy.
