I'm testing ubuntu 9.04 beta, but a similar thing happened in 8.10 so i
will explain the whole thing.
My wireless card is atheros, in ubuntu 8.10 the card was detected and
the free drivers installed, but in that network menu, the wireless
connections didn't show up. But one day, i booted the system with the
broad band modem plugged in (or plugged it in after the boot, not sure),
ubuntu detected it and refreshed the menu or something and it worked
ever since.
Now i installed 9.04 beta, the wireless adapter worked the first time i
booted the system, then i installed the updates and restarted, wireless
continued to work, then i installed the ati proprietary drivers and
rebooted. The system detected the connection but couldn't connect, kept
asking for the wpa key. I disabled the wireless and re-enabled, and
since then, it doesn't get past the "device not ready" stage.
I supposed this is corrected in 9.04 because i read these things were
going to be fixed, but anyway, in 8.10 i used to lose the network after
a system suspension and had to reboot.
