UPDATE: I installed Gizmo 5 from the Medibuntu.org repo and the audio
worked on the first shot. I noticed that the Gizmo audio config was
setup a little different than the default I got using the deb from the
Gizmo Project website.

Here's what's working for me. (Does not require changes to the ubuntu sound
preference settings)
Sound System: OSS (Note: I tried changing this to ALSA to see what would happen
-- audio stopped working again)
Input Device: /dev/dsp
Output Device: /dev/dsp
