I'm not sure if I am supposed to do something with Brian's entry. I'm a
relative newbie, so if there is something that I need to do, then I will
need specific instructions.

I don't know if this helps, but from a cold boot:

1. The BIOS boots and appears okay.
2. The GRUB menu comes up and proceeds to the next stage.
3. I get an ATA1 soft reset error. Not sure what that is about.
4. I get a Fatal Error. There is a module that doesn't load. The message goes
too fast for me to read the details of the message.
5. The ubuntu splash screen starts up.

If someone can tell me how to pause between 4 and 5 above, then I would
be able to read the details of the error message that is displayed in 4.
That might provide enough information to correct the problem.

Please note that on this machine, the external drive was recognised at
boot-up, so there is some change between 8.10 and 9.04 that is causing
the problem.

Thanks,
