I don't know what just happened but after installing pulseaudio (no commands or reboot) my sound worked and all is fine. I've attached a bunch of screenshots of my xfce4-mixer configuration and my tray. I think after the whole time the volume was just at 0% even though in the mixer I set it to 80%. ???
There is a whole bunch of new sound devices in the list when there used to only be HDA Intel and Realtek ACL268. The new ones all have pulseaudio somewher in their name.
