So I tried it and yes, it worked like a charm, this 'fi' in my case.
This leads me to conclusion that there are presumably several other old
bugs which has a solution but for some reason they are still not fixed.
If this is the case it is quite obvious why some problems are still
there year after year. For example, bug #95886 is now two years old. I
use ubuntu 64-bit 8.04.
