Still having the same problem in Jaunty (Beta) with kernel 2.6.28-11-generic ... I needed to presss "Enter" continuously to power off completely. Now, halt is working fine ( I don't know how I fixed ) but still showing the message, "unable to iterate IDE devices:no such files or directory". I also have " snd_hda_intel " running, maybe that is the evil, as described ...
