I did an update today and I still have that same crackling problem with
my sound. Even the login sound is crackling now. I hear some oscillating
sound all the time, except when I do a Mute or disable the PCM source.

I read about the crackling sound problem also in thread
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=843012. Is it probably
advisable to update to ALSA 1.0.19 and Pulseaudio 0.9.15?

I have also posted a further bug report 349228 which contains further
information about my hardware:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just did the ISO testing with the daily-live image (MD5 check-sum
03b63dada5e5fce0119a52d822e406a1). The audio test case hsi-001 didn't sound at
all. Only when I went to Preferences->Sound->Test I heard a crackling sound
fading into a clear tone. Stopping the test sound resulted again in a crackling.

I have to mention that I didn't install anything additional to the
standard ubuntu install (Jaunty Beta of today), I just checked the
Internet and restored my Evolution-backup before I started with sound
testing.

My hardware is a Toshiba satellite M40, sound card is ATI-IXP with a
Realtek chip ALC250 rev 2 (at least according to what alsamixer shows).

Sound didn't work properly since Intrepid.

I know there are already other reports about crackling sound. But I
didn't find yet a hint/workaround really working reliably on my system.

Can I help in finding the problem, what can I do next?

Here is what I get with "aplay -l":

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: IXP [ATI IXP], device 0: ATI IXP AC97 [ATI IXP AC97]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Modem [ATI IXP Modem], device 0: ATI IXP MC97 [ATI IXP MC97]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

In the attachement there is a screenshot of the sound preferences how
they come after installing.

After a reboot I heard the login sound properly, thus my hardware seems
to be alright. Then I started Firefox and then repeated the sound test
in "System->Preferences->Sound" and it still crackles.
