Public bug reported:

I have a panel on the left-hand side of my screen in which I have my
Buddy List window, using a swallowed application courtesy of gnome-
swallow-applet.

This works well for me, but annoyingly it fails to swallow the
application when I log in. Instead, it just seems to show a small black
box (possibly indicating that it can't find the window?). To get it to
swallow, I have to right-click on the black box and select
“Reconfigure…”, then click OK. The swallow applet restarts and the buddy
list is swallowed.

To try and investigate this, I tried creating a second swallow applet
with a bogus window name, and it showed a much larger black box
extending off the panel, but then crashed unexpectedly. Both applets
disappeared from the panel, and I was given a prompt to restart. But
when it restarted, I got a dialog saying that it couldn't find the Buddy
List window (pigin was already running but had no buddy list window). So
I guess that for some reason the applet thinks that it has swallowed the
window when it hasn't.

Reproducable always.
