I regret to inform that my bug report may be bogus. I initially performed a memtest which cleared, but it seems my motherboard trains the memory upon boot and subsequent reboots caused the memory to be set at a higher speed. Once i configured the BIOS to use static DRAM settings and not on-boot 'training', the problems went away and i could install 9.04 without problems.
