Aethralis,

Please look at your results for Liberation again. I just tried both Sans
and Serif and the characters did not drop out. However, the three glyphs
(026A, 0361 and 0283) changed to a different font when I applied bold.
You can see that they are a different font because the characters are
fatter. Plus the characters become the same for the Sans Bold and the
Serif Bold.

As for Gentium, it works because Gentium does not have a bold font.
Therefore, OOo fakes a bold. If you try Gentium in Scribus you won't
even be able to set it to bold because Scribus won't fake a font.

The Liberation results are interesting because the characters changed to
a different font instead of dropping out. I find that happens a lot in
OOo, but in other apps the characters just drop out. Perhaps OOo has a
feature where it grabs the next closest font.

I just tried it in Scribus using Georgia, Myriad Pro (Adobe), News
Gothic, Nimbus and Times New Roman. Each time, when I apply bold the
characters drop out. For the same fonts in OOo applying bold causes the
characters to appear in a different font, and it's always the same font.
