I ran
xev | sed -n 's/^.*state \([0-9].*\), keycode *\([0-9]\+\) *\(.*\), .*$/keycode
\2 = \3, state = \1/p'
according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting and pressed Fn-F8
on a Dell Latitude E6400 with Intel Graphics and BIOS version A09.

If I press Fn-F8 once, xev outputs:
keycode 235 = (keysym 0x1008ff59, XF86Display), state = 0x10
keycode 235 = (keysym 0x1008ff59, XF86Display), state = 0x10
keycode 235 = (keysym 0x1008ff59, XF86Display), state = 0x10
keycode 235 = (keysym 0x1008ff59, XF86Display), state = 0x10

Pressing Fn-F8 in a normal GNOME session switches between:
- LVDS (internal display) active, external display (DVI via docking station,
output HDMI-1) disabled
- LVDS active, external display (DVI via docking station, output HDMI-1)
enabled at its preferred mode. LVDS shows a portion (1440x900) of the whole
screen (1600x1200, resolution of the external display).

I'm going to test Fn-F2 (enable/disable battery charger), Fn-F3 (display
battery charge level, at least that's what it does on Vista) and Fn-F7 (Dell
Control Point Software) with input-events and acpi-listen if I have the time,
as those didn't cause a keypress event.
Note that Fn-F2 is working nevertheless, I can enable/disable battery charging.
Fn-F8 never worked for me with Ubuntu 8.10.
