Well, here's the catch. 
I use a Creative SoundBlaster X-fi card, for which I compile the drivers using 
Takashi Iwai's development version. It's been working great, simple install, no 
glitches, for well over a month. That's what gives me version 19 on the 
drivers. 

It produces the following driver / mixer. 
HD-Audio Generic
Mixer: Creative CA0110-IBG

I did three re-installs earlier this month (for unrelated reasons) and
had no trouble with the above configuration -- until Friday March 27.

I always do the same things. 
Install Ubuntu Studio daily build and all updates. 
Purge pulseaudio. Reboot. 
Compile & install alsa-driver. Reboot. 
At that point I should have a working sound system that does not use pulseaudio 
and does use my X-fi. But not this time. I did change permissions in 
System/Admin/Users to Use Audio Devices, but that did not help.
