Here is an Xorg.0.log after reproducing the issue just now.  There are
no error messages shown.

Also, it seems while this is 100% reproducible, the exact symptoms vary
a bit.  For instance, this time the left monitor was showing fine, and
it was the right monitor which blanked.  Also, a vt-switch can clear the
blanked screen and make it display properly if done on the first or
second apply.  After the second or third time though, the system is
locked up.

In syslog, I saw the following line which seems to coincide with the failure:
Mar 30 13:09:19 chideok kernel: [139426.676140] [drm] Num pipes: 1

>From syslog I can see it was also responding to sysreq+alt+k, however if
that was properly killing X, it did not cause the displays to come back
up.  But I think this rules out a kernel lockup, since it responded to
sysreq.

My guess from all of this is that gnome-display-properties is failing to
set up the output pipes correctly.  Both my displays are connected via
DVI outputs, so maybe the capplet's logic for handling such a situation
is erroneous?
