This could be related to your SiS chipset or your BIOS.  Try booting the
kernel with the "acpi=off" and/or "noapic" options.  You can edit your
/boot/grub/menu.lst file to try different options: create a new entry
that isn't the default with the same kernel image but has your new
options.  That way, it only tries the new option if you select that
entry at boot time.

Also, see if there are any BIOS updates available for your motherboard.
