My guess is, that the font packages for the fonts which are affected contain multiple font files for the same family, one for regular text, one for bold, one for italic, etc., but the amount of glyphs in these fonts are not the same. I.e. glyphs which are present in the Regular font, are missing from the Bold font, etc. In those cases, you will see the described behavior. To confirm this, you can open the ttf files in /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ with 'fontforge' and compare if the glyphs in the Regular and Bold (Italic, ...) fonts match up. If they don't (what I suspect) then it's an upstream font bug.
