for the record, the fonttools issue was bug 346820, which I fixed now. When did you take the screenshot? Is gnome-settings-daemon really not starting by default?
This sounds somewhat contradictory to comment 5, where the "Failed to acquire" shows that it is already running. Please don't start it as root, that won't work. It needs to run as your user. I looked at the upgrade log this morning, and apart from the fonttools breakage the package upgrade looked alright to me, so I guess it is related to your local configuration.
