1. Messages about missing firmware started not when I inserted it but when I tried to use it (with "tvtime" in my case)

All info about Xceive 5000 is here - http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Xceive_XC5000 As you can see yourself from this page kernels 2.6.24+ have built in support for the XC5000 and it works fine. And info about obtaining needed firmware are on the bottom of the webpage.
