I have a similar problem with a data disk using
Linux version 2.6.24-23-generic (bui...@vernadsky) (gcc version 4.2.3 (Ubuntu
4.2.3-2ubuntu7)) #1 SMP Mon Jan 26 00:13:11 UTC 2009.
When I insert the DVD the automatic mount fails with the dmesg:

[625752.146467] UDF-fs INFO UDF 0.9.8.1 (2004/29/09) Mounting volume 'XXXXX',
timestamp 2009/03/24 19:17 (1e5c)
[625752.146498] udf: udf_read_inode(ino 513) failed !bh
[625752.146502] UDF-fs: Error in udf_iget, block=1, partition=1
[625752.249900] ISOFS: Unable to identify CD-ROM format.

I can read the DVD fine with dd

$ dd if=/dev/scd0 of=dvd
7520960+0 records in
7520960+0 records out
3850731520 bytes (3.9 GB) copied, 275.807 s, 14.0 MB/s

Then I tried:

$ sudo mount dvd mnt -t udf -o loop
[sudo] password for wp:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so

Dmesg gives the same error as above:

[1235006.345482] UDF-fs INFO UDF 0.9.8.1 (2004/29/09) Mounting volume 'XXXXX',
timestamp 2009/03/24 17:43 (1e5c)
[1235006.345496] udf: udf_read_inode(ino 513) failed !bh
[1235006.345501] UDF-fs: Error in udf_iget, block=1, partition=1
[1235006.439967] ISOFS: Unable to identify CD-ROM format.

So I ship the raw dvd image to my Mandriva system running Mandriva Linux
release 2009.0 (Official) for i586, Kernel 2.6.27.14-desktop586-1mnb
where I can mount the file through the loop device and read the data
just fine. This suggests that the issue may go away with kernel
2.6.27.
