Yesterday I triaged a bug report where GNOME doesn't render anything but
the first desktop if it gets started with KWin set as default window
manager. So... do you use by any change a display manager other than
KWin in KDE? Or did you ever use compiz, so that there might be some
left over from it's setup?
Seriously, the description of this bug sounds exactly like the one of
GNOME+KWin.
