Further insight:

If I run with nVidia accelerated graphics driver (version 180) FF hangs 
completely as soon as flash media is started.
If I run with the standard vesa driver the system is very stable.

Repeatable at will.

nspluginwrapper and flashplugin-nonfree have been removed
libflashplayer.so has been installed
