Just to update you on my situation, as per someone's recommendation
above, I have been using 300dpi (or 600dpi, depending) Color, Black +
Color Cartr. instead of relying on "Controlled by 'Printout Mode'". I
have been having some success with this; at the very least I haven't
noticed my color cartridges running dry at record paces.

I'm hoping that at some point in the future default will be "Color,
Black + Color Cartr.", so that I won't have to manually select this
every time. I have been eyeballing every CUPS update description since I
reported this bug, and nothing seems to speak directly to it. Is this
something that has been scheduled for and included with Jaunty? Thanks
again for everything that you do.
